ITS 2022! - A late entry for 2022
My first post for 2023! Finance/accountancy auditor VS Sustainability auditor
Today I will be writing my own personal opinions on a job career called Auditing. I'm not talking about finance and/or accountancy auditing (which is the most typical and well known auditing jobs). No, today I will be talking about my auditing career in the sustainability area.
"Huh? Sustainability audit? What is that? Does it exists?"
You'd be surprised that "sustainability" is currently becoming more and more demanded in every industry.
Before I go on talking about sustainability audit, let me briefly explain to you what sustainability is all about.
Most might have the knowledge of sustainability but majority (from my experience interviewing and giving webinars) many would say, sustainability = protecting the environment which means, no deforestation, protect the wildlife and so on and so forth. Well, if I were to tell you that Sustainability is actually a larger picture and it is part of your daily life and/or job too.
"Really??"
Yes! Sustainability is not only about the environment, but social and business aspect as well.
"Social? Business?"
Sustainability in social consists of two things, workers and the communities. Workers aspects consists of fair labour, no forced labour, no recruitment fees, rights of workers and etc. Communities aspects consists of rights of communities, FPIC (Free, Prior, Informed, Consent), Respecting communities rights and etc.
Sustainability in business concept is whether the operation that is operating could generate the required revenue in order to sustain the business.
"What about sustainability in our daily life?"
Well, how's work life balance sounds? Are you currently balancing out your personal life and your career? Do you find yourself having trouble sleeping due to stress (thinking about work, issues with the kids and etc). Sustainability is huge. And sustainability is long term. There are no short term in sustainability. It is how you manage and sustain the outcome with minimal impact in the long run, which is beneficial for you or your business at the end of the day.
.................
Now on to the main topic. Sustainability audit. To name a few schemes and standards on sustainability. Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS), Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO), International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) and etc.
There are not many auditor's in the world that are competent and qualified to conduct sustainability audit. Easy example, lets take RSPO P&C (Upstream), there are roughly 175 or less, qualified auditors. And there are approximately, 533 Certified Mills worldwide under 124 companies as of June 2023. Mind you, one RSPO P&C Certificate, the audit process takes an average 5-6 days. The longest audit can take up to one and a half week. Plus, it is not a 1 man audit show. Average team members for one audit is 3-4 auditors in a team.
The difference between finance/accountancy auditing and Sustainability auditing is quite big. The only thing remains the same in auditing despite what area you are in is basically the basic in auditing. Which is the audit triangulation.
In finance/accountancy audit, auditor's will mainly be at the office, looking into documents and past records hoping that the ins and outs are tallied with the statement as well as no hanky panky being done. Whereas sustainability audit, if you are auditing forestry, palm oil, Biofuel and etc yes there are still documentation review, but that is half a day at most. The rest are site visits, site verifications, stakeholder consultation and interviews.
"What do you do when visiting the sites?"
Well, a lot! I'll try to summarize it briefly. To name a few, we look at environmental aspect such as clear borders between estates and community lands and/ or Forest, no observed deforestation, no encroachment of area, no open burning, Wildlife sightings (especially rare, threatened and endangered species - RTE) and etc. On Social aspect, we look into illegal workers, forced labour, child labour, mercenary sightings, workers quarters, clinics, canteen, community visits, stakeholder consultation and etc. And not to forget best management practices (BMP), proper PPE usage, OSH, Risk Matrix, Waste management, blanket spray, house keeping, Palm tree situation (if the tree is sick what does the site do to manage it?) and etc. Most important are the interviews that is conducting during site visits.
Quite different compared to finance/accounting auditing right?
"Is sustainability auditing hard?"
Compared to finance/accountancy audit, I would say yes. This is because companies are being deeply monitored by NGOs and audit reports from sustainability audits are being heavily scrutinized not just by NGOs, but communities, governments, accreditation body and even scheme owners. It is not easy. If you are working in a certification body, your ethics, Mental, Moral and honesty are always being tested from left and right, up and down. Be strong in those aspects. Being in a sustainability auditing industry is a huge high risk. It is not for everyone. The experience is valuable, but to become a qualified one, you need to go though a rigorous qualification requirement that takes years.
"Can a finance/accountancy auditor become a sustainability auditor?
Unfortunately no. This is because the requirement to become one needs someone with above 5 years of experience in the sustainability industry that is exposed and experienced to sustainability compliances. Compared to finance and accountancy auditor, anyone with a diploma or degree can apply for a work at any finance sector or auditing firm and you are trained there. Whereas to become a sustainability auditor, your educational background can be anything... but the requirement is that you will need to get the necessary experience in relevant sustainability industry (palm oil/forestry/biofuel/etc) only then can you apply to become one. Not to mention it is not easy to get into these sort of industry.
Now to address the big elephant on this matter, the big big question on this... How effective are these sustainability schemes?
There are 50-50 opinions on this. Some say it is worthless because there are still companies running rampant on deforestation and social issues. Some say it is effective to curb the issues. Some say they are in between.
Yes, there are still issues surrounding sustainability and the commitment to sustainability. But if there are no monitoring and compliance audit being done on these companies then who will do it? The government? The country? Are you 100% percent sure this will be effective? Because these companies are also contributing a lot to the economy by providing job opportunities to those in need. At least with these sustainability scheme (with cooperation from all parties such as the country itself, governments and NGOs) there is something to hold a grip on them and ensuring their commitment to sustainability. If not... and if let them be, the situation will be much much more worst then what is happening now.
"What about boycotting the product made from those companies?”
Are you sure boycotting is sustainable in the long run? We take palm oil for example. Are you 100% sure that other agriculture that is going to replace palm oil will be sustainable and could meet the demand and flexible yield derivatives of palm oil since it has the highest yield in the world despite being planted in a small area compared to other crops?.
Estimated calculation can be made, but don't take this as it is since each crop has their own calculation which is different. And some crop yield very much depends on the season, type of soil, Fertilizer used and etc.
For example, we take a minimum average yield per Ha of Palm oil Fresh Fruit Bunch of 1Ha - 10MT/FFB, and average OER (Oil Extraction Rate) of 20%. If 1 Ha produces 10MT FFB per Ha, the amount of Palm Oil (CPO) you'll get is 2MT. To get 100MT of Palm oil, you will roughly need around 50HA of land. (But this is only a figure. Some companies I know can get up to 18-30MT of FFB per Ha). Therefore, the total Ha area to get 100MT of Palm Oil is lesser than 50Ha with palm oil tree planted about nine meter's apart resulting in 128 to 140 trees per hectare.
Now if we were to replace Palm oil with Olive Oil, you will need approximately roughly around 400-600 olive trees per Ha and estimated to produce around 40 Quintal of Olives. 1 Quintal of Olives is equivalent to 100KG. So 40 Quintal of Olives is equivalent to 4,000KGs of Olives and if we were to convert it to MT, it would be around 4MT.
More trees to plant, the larger the areas to be cleared and more emissions are released.
That said, each of us has our own opinions about sustainability. And each industry should have their sustainability goals in place.
Going back to my main point here is the distinct difference of auditing between finance/accountancy auditing and sustainability auditing. Everyone can become an auditor, but it takes skills to become a good one. And not everyone are keen, brave enough and mentally capable of becoming a sustainability auditor.
Sustainability is becoming more and more demanded and the awareness for sustainability is getting bigger.
And with that, I will end my blog by saying, the world needs more qualified and competent sustainability auditors!!
Till then, stay tuned.

2021 Blog Update!!
Hello there!
It is 2021.. a very late entry to 2021 tho xD. I started this blog since 2009. I had an old blog which was created back in 2007/2008 ish? But it is so trash LOL.
Anyway, been blogging for 11 years now. And I'm 32 years old this year. How time flies and now i'm this career woman, married, but without kids xD
There were instances where you suddenly thought of the old days during secondary school, in this case, I was thinking alot about my days in SM All Saints. Feeling nostalgic as I aged. I can't believe that it was just 15 years ago since I finished highschool. I kept on remembering the days I was in SM All Saints. I don't know why I'm feeling nostalgic, maybe its the age? Or maybe it has been that long since I left KK? is 14 years long? xD
I don't remember if I still have pictures being kept during my days in All Saints, but I do still remember how the school looked like and all the nooks and crannies xD. I have photographic memories, so excuse me if I remember those small petty things xD The problem with photographic memories is that, when things change, you tend to be confused at first, and it will take awhile for you to be back on track.
When I came to Semenanjung to continue my studies in Kedah back in 2007, I was young but not naive ya (early exposure fault) and it was that age where you tend to enjoy life as much as you can. Biasa la, baru keluar dari sarang kan xD. Two years I was in Kedah doing my pre-degree studies. After that in 2009, I continued my degree studies in Puncak Alam, Selangor for a good 3 years (Until March 2012 only). I did went back to KK for a good 3 months after I finished my final semester exam... But I came back to KL and stayed at my sister's place because I was so adamant that I wanted to work in KL/Selangor. Came back to KL July 2012, and after that never went back to KK. Settled down in Peninsular for good. But I do go back to KK, once a while, during public holidays or when I am on leave.
But since my jodoh is with a peninsular guy, makin susah la mau balik KK. Susah in terms of, I need to plan my leave in advance and the husband's leave in advance, making sure no urgent work (training, work events, conference, audit and etc) clashes with our planned annual leave. Planning to get annual leave takes months of preparation xD The only leave that is easier to plan is Raya leave. xD
Jadi sambung... after working in semenanjung for 9 years, it came to me that I want to either go back and work in KK, with the same salary offer or more... OR, I would like to work overseas please :D My dream is to be able to work overseas and get a 5 figure salary that is above 20K USD. Yes, I have high ambitions xD. *Sigh* how I wish I can get a job in the states, or Canada, or New Zealand. Any job under the sustainability department? It can be palm oil or social/labour issues related :D. I am super qualified! xD
Speaking of sustainability, I would never.. in 100 years, would think that I will become an auditor. It never crosses my mind until, I became one in 2020. Not finance auditor ya, RSPO & MSPO auditor. The challenges of my job is quite ruthless, but I do enjoy the thrill of it. It made me realize that I am quite analytical when it comes to searching for a solution xD.
Anyway, it is getting late. I think that is enough of me blabbering my thoughts in this "online diary" xD. I just moved by the way. Jadi warga Puchong sudah. It has been 1 month since I moved to Puchong. quite happy with the new house that me and the hubs bought. :3
Yea, I think I better stop typing more. As I get older especially entering the 3 series, my eyes are no longer young like how it was used to be xD. By 10pm and above I will start to feel the drowsiness of wanting to sleep.
Yea, that's it! It is a once a year post, because there hasn't been any active audience to my blog. But if there is a request and an increase in audience, I would be more than happy to write in more interesting stuff in my blog.
So thanks for reading! Although I don't get much traffic readers, only a few people reads my blog xD. But I do appreciate your time to read and eventually feel a stranger expressing themselves. I know I sometimes mix my blog with english and Bahasa Malaysia, but feel free to google translate those words tho xD. I will always try my best to write my blog in english, but I also sometimes feel comfortable to mix in with my local language.
Thank you once again!
Stay tuned!

2019 I’m Back!! Hello 30!
What have I been up to lately since my last post in December 2017? Alot!
Well, I am still working in the same company, my first job after I graduated in 2012. So it has been 7 years working with RSPO. Not the same position and the same department. The 7 years in RSPO, I have been into 3 departments with different position. I was the CEO's Executive assistant. Got bored, and was offered a position in Membership. Lasted for a good three years, got bored of it as well, and as offered to a more technical position in assurance. Now, still in assurance but was just recently promoted to Manager from Senior Exec xD Alhamdullillah!! Rezeki Allah tidak pernah salah tempat. The key is to be patient and evolve yourself. I came into RSPO with ZERO knowledge about the palm oil industry. But I endure it, SABAR and learn! Never stop learning!
So its 2019, I am now officially 30 years old. Gone were the days where my age starts with the number 2 xD 3 series huh..
2018 was a bit of an hectic and tiring year for me. Work travels :( From all my years of travelling, last year was the first I experience being late for my flight. Kebas tu kaki berlari pg gate xD sampai sampai jak terus masuk kapal, stewardess terus tutup pintu, Aku terus duduk kepanasan xD hahahaha
And last year was also the first amongst my travels to miss a flight! I never miss a flight. But last year was the year. I just came back from my work travels in Indonesia. Took the last flight back because we had to transit Jakarta first. I have another flight the next day morning at 9am, going back to KK. Balik rumah around 3-4am, hubbs aku rindu, the next day bangun jam 8am sebab tidak sedar alarm clock xD Apakau ingat sempat ka kejar flight jam 9am?? Well, fortunately, that is the only flight that I missed! syukur! 3 kali jak la hampir miss flight, berlari sampai kebas tu betis LOL xD Back to back travelling is tiring. :(
So that is 2018. Come 2019, I promised myself and the hubbs to travel for a holiday. And we did, a nice winter holiday in Xi'an China. Touch down Xi'an Airport, 1 Degree's Celsius greeted us xD. The next following day was -3 Degree's Celsius with snow fog. Jadi karas la ba tu Muka, kebas-kebas tu hidung xD. But it was a beautiful and awesome place. Highly recommended for muslim travelers. It is really easy to find halal food because Xi'an is famous for its muslim street and muslim quarters. Kiri kanan makanan halal. Its going to be a long post if I were to post about Xi'an, so it will be in my next blog xD
Oh yaaa... Neeja is getting married!!! alhamdullillah so happy for her!!
Kalau Allah mau bukakan hati hambanya, memang buka la tu hati. Never underestimate the power of God!! Sebagai Hambanya kita cuma mampu berdoa buat yang terbaik untuk seseorang.
2019 will also be a busy year. And yes, back to back work travels belum campur personal activities lagi. I can already feel it because Baru bulan 3 sudah pack xD I need 10 phones khas untuk alarm clock, baru bunyi power. Terus melompat dari katil. No time to snooze one by one xD In sha allah I can do it! Ya Allah, bagi la hamba mu the strength to overcome any barriers. Amin!

SINGLE, COUPLE, ENGAGED, MARRIED
Gosh, its been four month since my last post in blogspot. Yes I admit I am slowly becoming in active to blogging compared to my younger days. 24 jam kau ber blogging.
So far I have two blogs. The first one was made in 2008, but that one has remained inactive for so long. I do not have the login credentials anymore because it was not made using my email address. After that I created a new blog, kira kira macam new life la gitu kan. So, this second blog is my current, active an ONLY blog I have.
Talking about new life, I created this new blog due to urgent circumstances back in 2009. I couldn't delete the old blog hence the old blog still exist in the internet till today. Its quite annoying but heck, live and move forward kan :D
The new blog was created just a month before I knew my husband. Have to thank his friend for introducing me to him via facebook. Long story short, he persuaded me to comment on this girls facebook as she was bashing my islam religion. And coincidentally my husband was invited to participate as well. Ooohhh my husband's facebook that time was SUPER private! No profile picture and you couldn't even add him on his own facebook! mystery mystery~
And so, after a heated debate with the girl, since I am obviously straight forward, I mentioned in one of my comment that I wanted to add as a friend on my husband's facebook but it was private and I couldn't add him. The next thing I know, he added me in facebook. So we DM in facebook, gave him my YM ID (Back then YM kan very famous :D) and he added me in YM. So we had our very first personal chat in YM. I was in my room in KK that time.
Well I was soooo curious on how he looked like. He still insists on not putting his picture in his Facebook profile. After 2 weeks of YM-ing him, alas, he uploaded his picture in facebook as his profile picture. Tapi, Apa paedah! Gambar muka tapi mata tutup! Buh!! hahahaha
Tapi dari sana, nampak la hidung dia yang mancung tu, muka tirus dia, and rambut kiut dia tu. Terpersona juga la tengok. But, I am still unsatisfied with the picture. Kept on communicating on YM as normal with him, sharing info about myself, he shared things with me. After 2 weeks, he uploaded a new profile picture in his facebook, this time, Gambar separuh badan tapi Side face jak. Lagi! Apa Paedah!! hahahaha
That time, memang nampak betul hidung mancung nya tu. I was thinking to myself that maybe he is a mix mat salleh, but no, he has that strong Chinese look and a hint of his Malay Jawa facial from his mom.
Again, He looks damn fine even for a side face picture. :D hahahaha
And so, after a month of knowing him through facebook, and YM-ing, at last, it was time for me to go back to KL to start my second semester Degree in UITM Puncak Alam (I hate this University) and to finally meet him! My first date with him was on December 23 2009, met him First time in Kinokuniya KLCC. And we stroll the KLCC garden. Not that Ideal, but, back then, still a student, so that is the only place that is convenient :D hahaha It was fun, no less, and it was memorable. Every now and then, every time I went to the KLCC park, I will always have this nostalgic feeling, because it was the place where I first dated my husband, first kiss pun di sana. hehehehehe (Too much info, diam la kau!)
And so, yes, after almost 5 years of being together, we decided to tie the knot on the 12th of September 2014. Previously I hated September, but now, I LOVE September :D
So yea, still counting, this year would be our 8th year together and 3 years of being married :)
That say, I am looking forward for a long prosperous relationship and In Sha Allah, hingga ke Jannah. Amin!

July 2016
Its been like forever since I updated anything on my blog. Its July. How fast time flies. Its just like yesterday 2015 were here.
what have I been up to? The usuall. Raya this year is in Johor Bahru, cause last year it was in Kota Kinabalu. Next year will also be in Johor Bahru and only the next Raya, which is in 2018, will I be going back to KK. Why? Because my dad wants either one of us in KK instead of the three of us going back KK together. So the house is less crowded, and there will always be someone to help my mom with the cooking during Raya.
Since this year's Raya all three of us are here in peninsular, theres no one helping her out with the cooking. My two brothers back in KK couldn't be much of a help to my mother. :(
So, as agreed, told my dad about it, and he agree that I will be spending Raya again in Johor Bahru next year, and the next following year only will I come back to Kota Kinabalu.
This year's Raya is the first time Hari Raya without my parents. It was mixed feelings, but my husband helped me throughout the ordeal :P Water works happened.
Am so excited for this saturday to happened. Booked a night stay at the Grand Lexis Hotel Port Dickson with a pool in the room. Love it! Bila lagi kan dapat chance gini with the husband *wink* *wink* And I even got the best priced deal ever!
This November, after the Bangkok event, will be going to Makati, phillipines with the cousins :D Hopefully I'm not that tired after the Bangkok event. Only a 3 days rest at home and will be flying off to phillipines again. Will be going to the Masungi Georeserve :D Healthy hiking.
For those that is not familiar with masungi georeserve, please do GOOGLE it! awesome view! Awesome healthy form of exercise.
Till then,

Hubbs: Hmm... Sayang memang tidak suka sama perempuan melayu.

Hubbs: Sayang tidak cari lain. Kalau sudah break, hati sayang jadi lain sudah.
Me: Macam mana laitu?
Hubbs: Sebab hati sudah sakit kan, jadi itu akan jadi Misi sayang, kasih sakit hati baby sampai anytime and to get you back.
Me: Aihhh!! lain juga?!
Hubbs: Iya la, kalau baby kasih tinggal sayang, kita sudah putus, tengok la. Everytime kalau baby balik KK, sayang guna sayang punya contact di MAS, Malindo, Air Asia untuk track flight baby. Time and date, bila balik KL. So setiap kali open house ka, pergi Raya, baby akan sentiasa nampak sayang.
